The Internet has always been a fascinating place, with new things to
be discovered every day. It is full of amazing information, drama, humor
... and not so good things. Things we sometimes wish we could unsee.
Whether it's a trashy ad, fake news clickbait that's suggestive or otherwise NSFW, or an
accidental visit to a porn site - it's not something that's bringing
life to people.
A few years ago, a confluence of
technology developments made it possible to much more easily deploy
basic artificial intelligence to web technologies. Additionally,
research in image recognition by computers has seen dramatic
improvements since 2012. Highly increased accuracy and speed have now
moved this technology from research into practical solutions for some
problems. Combined, these factors now make it possible to start
approaching filtering in the browser directly rather than relying on
external services - which also helps protect your privacy.
The
first natural step towards this is scanning images. I've been working
on a detection model and a plugin to do this since 2018, gradually
iterating through better models and improved performance. The result is
the Wingman Jr. Firefox plugin - I hope you find it useful!
